  4.     DIED. Bernard Castro, 87, pioneer of the convertible sofa bed;
  5. in Ocala, Fla. After emigrating from Italy at the age of 15,
  6. Castro labored as an apprentice upholsterer and later hit on the
  7. idea of developing a sofa that could be easily turned into a bed.
  8. Filling the need of cramped apartment dwellers after World War II,
  9. his invention became an instant success. Castro, a master of
  10. marketing, featured his daughter Bernadette in memorable
  11. advertisements as the little girl who opened sofas. More than 5
  12. million of them have been sold.
